Paul Smith furniture is a small company that specialises in making both traditional and contemporary hand made furniture. Throughout the manufacturing process we use modern materials and methods, yet the skills of the traditional craftsman are still to be found in many areas of production. This extends from the careful selection of veneers and veneer preparation, through to the skills of the cabinet maker and polisher.

We are a father and son team (Ian & Paul Smith), between us we have more than 50 years experience in the handmade furniture industry and have worked hard to build up a reputation for quality and reliability. Our business has been developed on the basis of “giving the customer what they want”, so whilst there is a standard range, all items can be modified to suit the customer's exact requirements. We also take great pride in making “one off” individual pieces of  hand made furniture which are completely tailored to our client's specifications. These have included pieces such as coffee tables, bookcases and wardrobes, right through to custom built kitchens, bedrooms and studies and all types of cabinet making. Customers range from individuals & retailers to hotels, restaurants and universities. It is very rarely that we cannot meet the customer's requirements.

Great emphasis is placed on the quality of finish, for the best hand made furniture will only come to life if finished in the appropriate way. On the traditional pieces all the stains are mixed and applied by hand to give a colour and rich patina generally only found in the most expensive furniture. After lacquering, all items are “cut-down and pulled over” by hand in the manner of the old “French polisher”. Final waxing and wiring creates a hand polished effect so different from the spray polishing and mass-produced furniture that is common these days. Other styles of furniture may use some of these techniques but often tints and the hardest of modern finishes are used to enhance the wood and give a very durable and modern appearance.
